1943 Hermes Baby Serial # 28684 1943 Hermes Baby typewriter, Serial # 28684 Suzanne LaPierre's 1943 Hermes Baby typewriter. 2025-08-18 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Suzanne LaPierre: 1943 Hermes Baby Serial # 28684 Purchased from a 2nd hand store not far from Ocean City, MD around April of 2025. This is the marbled gray finish only made in 1942 and 1943. It was missing the spring of the paper bail and some of the paint from the keys. There were several dead moths in the case- clearly someone had put this Baby in the corner! After basic cleaning, replacing the ribbon, and touching up the paint on the characters, I asked Mary Echavarria of MyOldTypewriter blog to help with the paper bail, using a spring from a parts machine that a typewriter enthusiast in Canada had kindly sent me. Mary wound up fixing several small issues with the machine and writing this blog post about it: https://myoldtypewriter.com/2025/08/17/my-summer-vacay-with-a-hermes-babay/?fbclid=IwY2xjawMQIjRleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHszsTDS7jlrutLLOvjofgriVWNVUsW56zbVNfLCMrwftO-lnMPsZV8dwIvIe_aem_9t3L2cgHhH9UdI-x5sLl1Q.

This lovely 82-year-old machine, born during WW2, is now back to full working order.

This is the keyboard after I filled in some missing paint on the "E," "3," "*/-" and some other characters using a paint stick. I mashed the semi-solid paint into the original crevices and wiped off the excess.

After restoration... I'm not sure why my photos are uploading blurry? They look clear on my pc and upload blurry. Sigh.

I am a librarian, artist, writer, and co-author of the book Desegregation in Northern Virginia Libraries (The History Press, 2023). If I'm working on a book or article for publication, I'm on a computer. However, I use my typewriters to create poems, type-doodles, art, and to write snail mail letters. I find the tactile nature of typing on a manual machine soothing and joyful. Each typewriter seems to have a soul and a story. Currently my collection is centered around midcentury models.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Hermes Baby on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Hermes Serial Number page and the Hermes Baby By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
