Description:
This one is a bit of an oddity; I can't find the serial number prefix on the Underwood or Underwood Elliot Fisher lists; it says only Underwood on the front and Underwood Elliot Fisher on the back; the lettering on the front says, specifically, Underwood US Navy; it only has capital letters--so it's no mystery what it was built for. It types well and is a beauty.
Update: now I know what it looks like when this machine types well after it was serviced and cleaned. I'm replacing the pic and type sample and adding a few more pics.

I started collecting typewriters in 1996 when my employer at an old newsstand in Kalamazoo, MI gave me her mother's Underwood Elliot Fisher Noiseless; I love these machines and learning how to repair and maintain them. The Noiseless was the medium for a zine I wrote through the nineties and into the oughts, and my nine-year-old daughter now types regularly.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood Universal on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood Universal By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
