Description:
2024-12-11 Acquired via ShopGoodwill.com for $56 . Minor damage in shipping, but imminently restorable.
2024-12-15 Spent an hour today cleaning up the case of my Corona Standard and removing some rust from the metal fittings. Some of the material is peeling away from the case and I'm debating whether or not I ought to recover the entire thing—a restoration project I've not yet done on any of my machines. Took it with me to the car wash to blow out all the cobwebs using their air guns. (I'm really hoping for that new air compressor for Christmas.)
2024-12-28 - 12/29 I spent the weekend cleaning up this machine. I tore it down reasonably and flushed out the internals with mineral spirits. I washed the exterior panels and waxed and buffed them. I've cleaned up most of the smaller issues and only have a handful of adjustments to make to finish it out. I'm also on the lookout for some replacement feet as these ones are in rotten shape and one of them has cracked significantly.
2024-12-30 Got most of the adjustments cleaned up and working properly; I still need to do a small adjustment on the ribbon vibrator to clean up the bichrome settings.

Hello! I’m a Johns Hopkins trained biomedical and electrical engineer with a variety of interests in the entertainment industry, information theory, evolution, big history, genetics, signal processing, transgenetics, translational medicine, and theoretical mathematics. I’m a strong advocate of the IndieWeb movement.
I have a love for analog office equipment including library card catalogs and typewriters. As of Fall 2024, I've got a segment of 29 typewriters, mostly portable and manual models along with three Royal standards, a Remington Standard, and one SMC typebar electric. I have been learning how to completely overhaul all of the machines in my collection, all of which work well aside from one or two machines which need some parts. I have a burgeoning collection of typewriter tools for continually repairing, maintaining, and upgrading my machines.
I've got more than half a dozen card catalogs including a Gaylord Bros. and a Steelcase along with several Remington Rand and some Shaw-Walkers. I've lost count of my index card collection once I passed 10,000.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Smith Corona Standard on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Smith Corona Serial Number page and the Smith Corona Standard By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
