Description:
I got this machine from an antique mart at the beginning of my typewriter fever. It seemed to need minimal repair and I wanted a solid citizen as I explored the world of Remingtons. Little did I know that it is a bundle of quirks. The return lever drags on the spool cover on the left; the spool cover will not entirely close on the right; the carriage sometimes returns one space over for no discernable reason; the shift lock does not function and I jerry-rigged the shift to lift the carriage to properly print the capital letters. I will continue to do my best to correct all these things, but this guy is more something to look at than type on.

I lucked into a 1938 Remington Rand 5 at a thrift store a while back and the rest is history! Typewriter fever has led me to the Typosphere, where I am working to further my knowledge of these fabulous machines. (My husband calls it "Typewriter Porn".) Remingtons are still my brand of choice!
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood Universal on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood Universal By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
