1940 Smith Premier Noiseless 81 Serial # E19521 1940 Smith Premier Noiseless 81 typewriter, Serial # E19521 Javier Vazquez del Olmo's 1940 Smith Premier Noiseless 81 typewriter. 2021-02-08 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Javier Vazquez del Olmo: 1940 Smith Premier Noiseless 81 Serial # E19521 This typewriter was a gamble... and it didn't go well. The seller insisted this beautiful typewriter could be a big hit, but it didn't work I asked what happened, but saying his answer was vague would be a understatement. Against my better judgment I thought I could iron out any little problem that would arise, and when the typewriter arrived home it happened what was bound to happen: no hope for this one. A lot of stuff missing, and the only way to rescue it would be finding another Smith Premier Noiseless 81 and get the parts it needs to type again.

Or if it is too hard to find one of these, I could look for a Remington Noiseless 8. Looks like Remington made typewriters in France under the brand Smith Premier. I don't know exactly which models followed this rebranding pattern, but as far as my experience goes Remington sold Remingtons in France from the 50's onwards. The dating is a bit confusing. There's a sticker on the paper table which says 1940, but I can't confirm it because the s/n doesn't match. I got this one here in Spain, but according to the badge at the front this typewriter was first sold in Grenoble.

The first typewriter I saw was my grandpa´s Olivetti Linea 98 at the office. It was just a curio for me. Then I was given a Nakajima, which I didn´t use and my grandfather took it from me because it was easier to handle than the bulky Linea 98. Now I own that typewriter, and I started a little collection in Valladolid, Spain. The Nakajima, which is "my" typewriter only returned home in 2017, almost 20 years later, when he wanted a better typewriter.

A collection that started small grew into something bigger, a nuisace for my family and a great source of satisfaction for me.
