1939 Underwood Universal Serial # F1220451 1939 Underwood Universal typewriter, Serial # F1220451 Plante and Doole-Fisher Typewriters's 1939 Underwood Universal typewriter. 2018-07-04 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Plante and Doole-Fisher Typewriters: 1939 Underwood Universal Serial # F1220451 This Underwood Universal came in for a regular service. The machine is in very good mechanical as well as cosmetic condition and types very well. Having used quite a few of these Universal models or their equivalent, I can conclude that they are robust little warriors that have inherited the sustainable design their grand siblings are so known for. These typewriters were manufactured in large quantities and are therefor still relatively common to come across.

There were various models produced and available during the reign of these models. Such as the Underwood Champion and the Underwood Leader which were all equivalents economically to this machine, most often fitted with less luxurious options and a somewhat degraded build-quality, but still relatively pleasant to use.

The common flaw these machines suffer from, especially after 80 years is that their rubber feet disintegrate to a point where a method has to be taken in order to prevent the mechanism from hitting the table. I decided using wine-bottle corks was an excellent temporary solution to something that I will advise the owner of perhaps investing in the future.

This typewriter was Canadian made, and has the notorious "Elliot Fisher" emblem on the side.
