1939 Underwood Noiseless Serial # N5064849 1939 Underwood Noiseless typewriter, Serial # N5064849 David Vandergucht's 1939 Underwood Noiseless typewriter. 2024-11-24 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of David Vandergucht: 1939 Underwood Noiseless Serial # N5064849 This is a fun typewriter. It was a pain to clean and lubricate because all of the type arms were coated in oily, dusty residue. They have many pivot points, so I took them all out of the machine the clean thoroughly before reassembling. I now have this typewriter at work and use it to type up notes etc... Of course it isn't actually noiseless, but it does lack the high pitched whacking sound that most typewriters make. The carriage shift is probably the loudest part about the typewriter.

Annoyingly, my particular typewriter is pica, but has the scale bar of an elite machine, which makes it a bit confusing when setting tabs and margins and laying out a page. Because of that, I try to just get things set up and then leave them at the same settings.

Also this is noticeably heavier than other standard typewriters of similar size. It's definitely the heaviest typewriter I currently own. I suppose a lot of the frame is cast metal and it covers all of the area to help keep the noise low.

Did you know that the little "gun-sight" looking thing on the top cover of the typewriter is meant to be used like this? There isn't a cursor arrow to show your typing position, so if you want to check, you can flip back the paper bail so it lines up with the sight and shows you your position.
