1939 Hermes 2000 Serial # 52074 1939 Hermes 2000 typewriter, Serial # 52074 Mighty Jabba's 1939 Hermes 2000 typewriter. 2023-07-13 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Mighty Jabba: 1939 Hermes 2000 Serial # 52074 I don’t think I even knew this original version of the Hermes 2000 existed before it popped up on eBay, prompting some furious searching of the Database and a spur-of-the-moment purchase. The condition of this particular one seemed almost too good to be true, and while it’s not absolutely perfect, I think it’s pretty darn close to what you would’ve received buying one of these new in 1939 (minus the rock-hard feet, which have broken off).

I have a lot of glossy black typewriters, and I really love this look in general. But this is definitely one of the most attractive ones I’ve ever seen. It’s just gorgeous, although capturing that in photos can be tricky due to the many reflective surfaces.

There are a few interesting quirks about this machine, including the crossbow logo, which I understand indicated that something was Swiss, and was not unique to Hermes. I also love the little swirls on the square ribbon covers. The keyboard is basically a standard US QWERTY layout, which seems to be on the rarer side for these machines. The keys themselves are black with yellow lettering, which don’t think I’ve seen before on a typewriter (I’m pretty sure these were always yellow rather than turning yellow over time). There are also some unusual fractions like 1/8, 3/8, 5/8 as well as more common ones like 1/2, 1/4 and 3/4. Not sure what these would’ve been used for back in the day.

The machine types well, although the feel and sound are pretty different from my Hermes 3000. The only real issue is that I find that the ribbon rubs on the paper while typing, so you get a bit of red and black smudged on the paper. Could be the fault of my ribbon, which is not the highest quality.

I'm relatively new to typewriter collecting, but am rapidly making up for lost time...
