Description:
Pica; the photos are from 2021.
This typewriter belongs to a family friend of mine. It was her mother's typewriter, and she fondly remembers all the (ab)use it got when she was little. When I got it, it was jammed, dirty, and tired-looking. But this Standard cleaned up beautifully and is back with its thrilled owner.
During the 1930s Corona offered 3 main models of its basket-shift portable, the Silent, the Sterling, and the Standard. While the Standard didn't have some of the deluxe features the Silents and Sterlings received, you still got automatic ribbon reversing, bichrome ribbon selection (and stencil), choice of paper fingers or bail, single and double line spacing, carriage lock, and even a touch tensioner. Everything a home user would need and some extra -little wonder these were such popular machines.

Been enjoying the hobby since 2015; finally getting around to sharing my collection digitally. I only keep the typewriters I use and enjoy the most, so check out my sightings to see all the machines that came and went.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Smith Corona Standard on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Smith Corona Serial Number page and the Smith Corona Standard By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
