Description:
Found at an antique store. At the time I was looking for a 1930s Royal Portable and that might have caused me to overlook a few issues that I didn’t notice until I was home….
The paper guide is missing from the paper table, the return lever or its mount are bent or just worn out and touching the ribbon cover, the variable line adjustment is broken owing to pot metal cracking on the platen end, and the platen is full of tiny cracks. I also thought that the paint was just dusty, but recently I realized it is nicotine stained. Overall the machine is in worse shape than I thought and you can tell it has had a life of heavy use.
Oddly, the type action is as good as any Royal Portable typewriter I’ve used, which is to say I like it. I don’t know what I am going to do with it yet. Maybe a restoration project.
This is one of several typewriters from 1938 I have found this year.

I started collecting typewriters several years ago and it started with a late 1960s Smith-Corona Sterling portable that I got as a gift.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Royal De Luxe on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Royal Serial Number page and the Royal De Luxe By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
