1938 Hermes Baby Featherweight Serial # 138723 1938 Hermes Baby Featherweight typewriter, Serial # 138723 Tom Beauvais's 1938 Hermes Baby Featherweight typewriter. 2018-04-27 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Tom Beauvais: 1938 Hermes Baby Featherweight Serial # 138723 Purchase at antique mall in Parma, Michigan (west of Jackson). Was surprised to see it. The Hermes serial numbers confused me at first as well as the "Baby" and "Featherweigfht" brands. But it des say "Featherweight" and the SN of 138723 fits bertween 1937 and 1939 with 1938 starting with 138001. The keybars did not want to return although they would strike forward. I later applied some lube and they moved okay except for about 3 keybars. Ribbon was new and the keyboard was clean. No shift lock however. I don't care for the metal case but the machine inside is more important.

Changed my collecting priorities to portables except the Olympia SG3 with the cyrillic keyboard and my Underwood No. 5--those beasts are too heavy. Sold my earlier typewriters to a friend. I had too many. I use carbon paper for typefaces when the machines have faint ribbons. I take photos with my Canon Powershot SX50HS (50x optical zoom and macro settings). I find it difficult doing typeface specimens since I use a Corsair K70 RGB gaming keyboard plugged into my 15-in Macbook. I got it solely for the deep key travel. I have fun hunting machines in antique malls in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana.
