1937 Monarch (Remington) Pioneer Serial # 120064 1937 Monarch (Remington) Pioneer typewriter, Serial # 120064 Wayne Bouchard's 1937 Monarch (Remington) Pioneer typewriter. 2025-01-17 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Wayne Bouchard: 1937 Monarch (Remington) Pioneer Serial # 120064 Here we have a rather unique typewriter. This is a Monarch Pioneer. It is what I call an "abbreviated" typewriter from the depression era. In essence, this is a Remington portable 4, mechanically, but it was stripped of all functions that were strictly unnecessary for practical operation. It has no carriage return or line advance. It has no tab or margin system. There is no bi-chrome feature. There is no shift lock or even a right side shift key. It even eliminates all but four keys from the top row, which means several type bars and glyphs are missing as well. No line space selector and not even a carriage lock. Further, the typewriter was available only in basic pica type. The typewriter was as simple as they could make it. It was an attempt to cut production costs (and, hence, the retail price) as much as they could. My understanding is that was also a version of this that only had upper case letters. That allowed them to eliminate the shift mechanism entirely.

This particular one dates from 1937 and comes with a black case. The typewriter was in good shape, but required a good deal of rust remediation and touch up painting. The case was another matter. All the hardware was badly rusted and the spring on the right-hand latch broke while I was cleaning it, having aged and, probably, simply rusted through. The interior is worn, but intact. A former owner placed a piece of white cardboard below the typewriter to limit further case wear, something I greatly appreciate. At any rate, the case functions and the latch holds securely. This, to me, really is an interesting piece of history that I'm glad to have in my collection!

You can see the wear on the case here that a previous owner attempted to slow down. Notice that there is no securing hardware. The typewriter simply sits in the case, which is dimensionally sized to minimize motion.

Rust removal from the hardware was successful, but there was a great deal of pitting. So it could not be polished up adequately again.
