1936 Novalevi Portable Serial # 85430 1936 Novalevi Portable typewriter, Serial # 85430 Massimo Martelancz's 1936 Novalevi Portable typewriter. 2021-06-21 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Massimo Martelancz: 1936 Novalevi Portable Serial # 85430 Novalevi was one of the many names with which Italian S.I.M. typewriters were named in the 1930s. In that particular historical moment in Italy and following the fascist rhetoric of the period, same models were called with different and incredible names such as Ardita, Balilla, Romana, Sabaudia, MAS, Guidonia, Augusta, Astoria, Littoria, Patria and others.... As for Novalevi, I think (but I'm not sure) that it has something to do with a large Italian distributor of the time, E.Levi & C. of Milan. S.I.M. machines were of poor quality at the time and those found today are usually in very poor conditions, not working and missing of parts. I had the fortune to find this specimen beautifully preserved and full working. A strange fact about the year of production: following the lists of serial numbers / year of production this specimen should be back to 1933. But this is impossible due to the presence of the fascist sticker "prodotto in Italia" that was used for Italian products starting only from 1936. Last, a curiosity : the ribbon color selector that usually in all typewriters is blue (or black) / white (neutral) / red, in this case is green / white / red, just like the Italian flag.

I have been an Italian typewriter collector for many many years. At that time, I loved very old typewriters from late 1800s to early 1900s. After a break of a few years I returned to collect typewriters but no longer so old, I prefer now the design of the 40's, 50's and 60's. Yes, I am an affectionate collector of Olivetti, of course, but I'm attracted to all the other brands from that period, not just Italian.
