1936 Continental Silenta Serial # 710920 1936 Continental Silenta typewriter, Serial # 710920 Aaron Friedrich Lotar Rolf Klamp's 1936 Continental Silenta typewriter. 2023-02-13 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Aaron Friedrich Lotar Rolf Klamp: 1936 Continental Silenta Serial # 710920 I picked this Continental Silenta up for free. It was not working, and so the previous owner just wanted to give it away.
As it came out, it was a frozen Tab-Break mechanism which prevented the carriage from moving, because it had stuck half enganged. The reason was rock hardened grease that had developed symptoms of cold welding inside the mechanism.
Even after one week of putting the whole part in white spirits, it was stuck put. So I undertook harder measures, using well dosed hammer blows to free the centrifugal flywheel that was sitting tight on its drive shaft. That done, the part was working again as intended.
Beside this, the renewal of the upper paper rollers had bin the biggest problems on the way., but now the Silenta is again fully functional and shining.
