1935 Smith Corona Silent Serial # 1S15291 1935 Smith Corona Silent typewriter, Serial # 1S15291 Aaron Friedrich Lotar Rolf Klamp's 1935 Smith Corona Silent typewriter. 2023-07-29 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Aaron Friedrich Lotar Rolf Klamp: 1935 Smith Corona Silent Serial # 1S15291 The Corona Silent is a little rarity in Germany, and this applies even more for the colored versions.
I bought it from a man, who brought it from Great Britain in the seventies. It’s beautiful British Racing Green was one of the reasons he took it home. It shines even brighter and more yellowish in nature.
I guess that the Corona Silent was never distributed here, and occasions like this are the reason they pop up at all.

The major drawback at this specimen was, by the point I bought it, that it wasn’t operational. The lever mechanisms of the 2 W Z A were bend like Brezels. How this happened the Seller couldn’t answer anymore and it is a total mystery to me, how defects like this can arise.

Luckily all this levers are located close to each other, on the very left of the segment. So I could undertake a quick repair, by removing the levers from the segment axis and bend everything into shape. Attention was given at the angles of each lever, as they increase progressively to the edge of the segment.
After fiddling all into place again, a Typesample proved to be successful.
Despite that I undertook a superficial cleaning - a little bit of the usual routine.

But there is still a lot to be done. The rubber parts are in a condition that can be expected with a Typewriter of that age. One of the upper pressure rollers hasn’t even hold on it’s metal guides. Also a deep clean of the machine wouldn’t be a mistake and the case seems to had crossed path with an apartment renovation. The handle has also seen better days.

But for now I’m happy, that the Corona Silent basically started to whisper it’s sweet clickediclack again and from its actual feel I know, that every work I put into it further, is a more than worthwhile one.
