1935 Royal KH Serial # KH-1789064 1935 Royal KH typewriter, Serial # KH-1789064 James Grooms's 1935 Royal KH typewriter. 2025-02-22 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of James Grooms: 1935 Royal KH Serial # KH-1789064 This one was rough. Too much surface corrosion to the plating for my goals. Plus it was an institutional machine. Add to that it had been dropped squarely on the bottom bending the feet rails. So I was a bit leary of what the end result would be. A bit more damage and it'd been sent to the parts shed. Alas, she gives a nice impression on a fair platen and I exhausted the supply of rehabbed feet and cushion bits.

Last of the glass paneled machines. The KHM goes to a crinkle finished panel. I repainted the left side and saved the touch control side with some careful touch up. The 35 ad shows an H. These have plated carriage side covers and a unique plated right side end cap to the platen. Most appear to have had tab keys as well. I am pretty certain all of these H/KHs had the bottom cover when new. This one might have been discarded in the feet rail smash up? Be good little historians, and add a photo of the bottom of your typewriters.

Quality control skipped out on the day this was painted. There are a number of ugly runs in the paint.

All Royal until the shelves are clear.

As with many, the bug is back there somewhere due to an Underwood No. 5. My grandparents had a No 5. My parents had a yellow Royal Safari that I used to index card everything, including a beer can collection. Collection syndrome clue! A casual interest in typewriters started with a garage sale 3 bank simply because it said Underwood on it. Typewriters were found here and there , but I wasn't actively looking for them. The long dormant collecting tic was activated when my neighbors left a Remington Quiet Riter on the curb when they moved.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to anyone area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.
