Description:
Here we have an absolutely GORGEOUS Royal 10 typewriter from the last year of production (1934). It is a Pica machine (10 pitch, 6 LPI) with nothing particularly special about it, yet still runs like a champ! On a side note, while this is not the specific unit, I'm told my grandmother used one of these all the way up into the '50s or '60s. I can well understand why she kept it rather than trading it in for a newer unit. It will always get the job done if you do your part!
This typewriter is finished using "Japan Black", as were all the early Royals. That means it is a thicker finish that takes really well to polishing but, because of the composition, never seems to come quite clean. In truth, it does, but you're cleaning off some of the bitumen in the finish, making it look like its still dirty. Give up and use Nu Finish to put a nice shine on it! I probably spent 6 hours just on the exterior surfaces but, as you can see, the results were WELL worth it!
The mechanics of this typewriter, naturally, will remind you a lot of the earlier No. 5, but there are important changes, not the least of which is the addition of an automatic ribbon reverse. Interestingly, possibly due to patent restrictions, the Royal typewriters used a custom spool design with the reverse trip built into the bottom of the spool in the form of an interference switch which would drop down after the last coil of ribbon left the spool and released the arm. That means that these typewriters need spools designed specifically for them or the reverse mechanism will not function.
On the sides, you can see the original beveled glass covers that allow for visibility into the interior of the typewriter. On the bottom is a sturdy metal cover, protecting the insides from damage. Behind that cover, in the curved relief, you can find the wheel that serves as a touch control for the keys. Another facet of the early standard designs is the extra set of holes you can see about a third of the way from the back on the under side that were used to bolt the typewriter to its desk, to prevent movement during use. This was usually done on dedicated typing desks which either had pre-drilled holes or slots or were intended to be drilled to fit the specific unit.
Royal made millions of typewriters and, thus, we are fortunate that many surviving examples are likewise in such fabulous condition today!

Collector of several things, including typewriters, slide rules, and mechanical calculators.
Started collecting typewriters in 2023 with a Royal HHE like the one I did my first book report on when I was in school and using my dad's old typewriter.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Royal 10 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Royal Serial Number page and the Royal 10 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
