Description:
No. 13 in my collection, a Remington Noiseless 10. When it arrived, the type slugs did not reach the platen, and the carriage got stuck at about 1/3 of travel.
I managed to solve the travel issue (had to shim a part to clear a rail), but now it gets stuck at about 2/3 travel. Unsure what is holding it up. After staring at the service manual, I was able to figure out the adjustment between the platen and rest of the mechanism. Now it makes an impression enough to make visible print. Changing the ribbon made the print more clear.
After messing with it a bit, the "noiseless" mechanism seems horribly complicated compared to the usual mechanisms. It is true it doesn't make the sharp crack of the typearms hitting metal, but it makes plenty of noise anyways. I guess it is quieter, though.
I assume this noiseless mechanism is similar to that found on other "noiseless" models. I can see how it fell out of favor, as it seems to have about 5 times more parts than similar type mechanisms. Particularly interesting is the fact that one type-arm has TWO slugs (except the far left and far right).
I'm not sure how I can free up the carriage so that it will move freely. I can't tell if something needs to be lubed, or bent into position, or if the carriage return spring needs to be tensioned more.
This now ties with the Remington Portable Model 5 as my oldest typewriters. The Model 5 is much, much simpler, and I'm not sure that it's that much louder.
Another Goodwill auction acquisition. This one was sent from North Central Wisconsin.

Relatively new to collecting. Would like to document my collection.
Planning on sticking to full-sized American machines so I don't spend too much on fancy European portables.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Remington Noiseless 10 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Remington Serial Number page and the Remington Noiseless 10 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
