Description:
A fairly typical proto-O in most respects, save a three-digit keystroke accumulator installed near the left-hand ribbon spool cup which required significant modifications to the typewriter itself. The workmanship of the installation is very impressive and involved, with a lot of disassembly, hand-shaping, filing, drilling, and soldering. Extra holes have been hand-worked into several panels. Witness marks on the key-levers, platen, anvil, return lever, right-hand margin, margin release mechanism, and margin rail indicate intense use over a very short time frame followed by long-term storage. These witness marks are consistent with being mounted to an automatic typing machine such as an AutoTypist. Potentially prototypical; most likely an endurance or speed demonstrator unit by Royal, but perhaps a proof-of-concept installation by Veeder-Root.
Improper 'in-the-wild' conditions rendered the machine wholly operable but unusable, and the nature of its being leaves me no choice but to leave it unrestored.
