Description:
This specimen was found very very dirty and with jammed mechanisms, it was not easy to restore it but after a lot of work it is now in good condition and well working. The first series Olivetti M40 (1931-1937) differs from the second (1937-1945) in some small details such as the side covers, coil covers, and different decals. During the war a simplified M40 called M40 KR (KR stands for kriegsausfuhrung = war export) was produced for the German army. After the war a new M40 model known as M40/3 or M40 third series was produced for a few years, with an unattractive design. This specimen is missing the front decals, still visible in backlight but disappeared over the years.

I have been an Italian typewriter collector for many many years. At that time, I loved very old typewriters from late 1800s to early 1900s. After a break of a few years I returned to collect typewriters but no longer so old, I prefer now the design of the 40's, 50's and 60's. Yes, I am an affectionate collector of Olivetti, of course, but I'm attracted to all the other brands from that period, not just Italian.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Olivetti M40 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Olivetti Serial Number page and the Olivetti M40 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
