1931 Underwood 6 Serial # 4007673-10 1931 Underwood 6 typewriter, Serial # 4007673-10 James Grooms's 1931 Underwood 6 typewriter. 2026-11-04 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of James Grooms: 1931 Underwood 6 Serial # 4007673-10 A nice No. 6 that, unfortunately, is decal-distressed. I am going to guess there was some repeated wipe downs with something that was too harsh because the rest of it is nice. Maybe I can come up with parts with better graphics?

I have yet to encounter a No. 6 that didn't end up for parts. Two had broken frames, and a third had a broken escapement wheel to pinion shaft, and someone went to town trying to work on it, so I punted on it. It was pretty rough. So can this fourth one type? The drawband is snapped.

There is some conflicting info on the No. 6 SNs. The main page has "4011883 1931. This matches the consumer and dealer print sources as to when the No. 6 was released for widespread sale in June 1931. Beeching has 4000000 for the start SN, but uses 1932. There are machines in the gallery before the 401 June numbers, so it looks like Underwood had a clean start at 400 sometime before June 1.

I think the two 1930 gallery machines are actually 1931 models, especially since these are export machines.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to any one area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood 6 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood 6 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
