Description:
Underwood Portable 4 Bank, serial number 490487. It is Underwood "Colonial Blue." Obtained from Shanyn Fiske in December 2016. This is my 31st typewriter.
This machine was manufactured circa January, 1930.
This typewriter was picked out of the trash and eventually found its way to Shanyn Fiske. Unable to fix a serious escapement issue which made the typewriter unusable, she opted to sell it to me. After some time diagnosing the issue, I managed to fix it by building up a small piece of felt on the mechanism which had disintegrated over the years and was causing the dog to fail to catch the star wheel. Several other mechanical issues, such as old rubber and a few parts that had gone missing over the years (including the pressure springs under the paper tray), needed to be addressed. A lot of work has gone into this machine but it is slowly coming back to it's former glory.
