1930 Underwood 5 Serial # 3723416-5 1930 Underwood 5 typewriter, Serial # 3723416-5 James Grooms's 1930 Underwood 5 typewriter. 2026-01-18 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of James Grooms: 1930 Underwood 5 Serial # 3723416-5 A really nice late No. 5. These are easy to spot by the ribbon selector. This one is super clean and received some new rubber bits, likely in the 60s. Not a spot of rust!

Like a former heavyweight who wouldn't or couldn't retire, the No. 5 marched on way past its prime.

The foot number is 153709 and so far removed from the SN. The No. 6 rolls out in 1930. Are these No.6 frames to account for the low frame casting number?

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to anyone area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood 5 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood 5 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
