Description:
Royal P, from 1930.
I received it as a non-functional display piece.
I eventually worked up the courage to take it off the base. I stared the the mechanism for some time. I poked at what looked like a cushioning pad on the shift lever, and to my surprise a pencil eraser popped out. It seems that some time within the last 96 years, this pencil eraser had fallen into the mechanism, preventing the shift mechanism from being totally shifted or non-shifted. This misaligned the platen so nothing could be typed correctly.
Once the eraser was removed, the lower case worked flawlessly, but the upper case did not work correctly. Eventually I figured out that one of the linkages had been stretched out of shape - most likely during the effort to make it work with the eraser stuck inside. Once I worked up more courage to take off the covering, I was able to get into the mechanism and make the appropriate adjustments. Once I undid some other wrong adjustments, it started working properly.
An interesting detail is a label from Harry's Business Machines of Reno, Nevada. Not sure how it got here in New Jersey.
This was a Facebook Marketplace purchase from Woodcliff Lake, NJ.

Relatively new to collecting. Would like to document my collection.
Planning on sticking to full-sized American machines so I don't spend too much on fancy European portables.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Royal P on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Royal Serial Number page and the Royal P By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
