1929 Underwood 5 Serial # 2501035-5 1929 Underwood 5 typewriter, Serial # 2501035-5 Edgar Zapata's 1929 Underwood 5 typewriter. 2020-01-25 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Edgar Zapata: 1929 Underwood 5 Serial # 2501035-5 This Underwood No. 5 traces back to a find in NYC in the 1970s, placed at the trash cans, the way people put things out in case others might want them. It was in usable condition then, and put into service around 1986 to write a short paper in college, the electric typewriter having failed, and the first PC and dot matrix printer still a year or so away. It was stored nicely and now I've cleaned it up once more, adding a new black/red ribbon. It turns out it works in both colors. Ever notice after typing on a manual typewriter that when you come back to the computer the keys feel different? The Underwood may stay in my office rather than be stored again...

Proud owner of an Underwood no. 5 serial number 250 1035 - 5. In the family since sometime in the 70s. Used once in a typewriter emergency in college in the 80s (the electric Brother failed a day before a paper deadline.) Put away since, but now cleaned up and working.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood 5 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood 5 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
