1928 Underwood 5 Serial # 2449908-5 1928 Underwood 5 typewriter, Serial # 2449908-5 Plante and Doole-Fisher Typewriters's 1928 Underwood 5 typewriter. 2019-08-09 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Plante and Doole-Fisher Typewriters: 1928 Underwood 5 Serial # 2449908-5 This example of an Underwood No.5 was manufactured in the late 20's and therefor represents that late design of the classic Underwood standard. This typewriter belongs to a friend of mine asked me to refurbish the machine in order to make it functional enough for regular usage. The typewriter initially appeared to be in very good condition, mainly due to the immediate lack of corrosion. However, upon closer inspection, this was mainly due to inordinate amount of oil present in the mechanism. The inner works really gave off the impressions that the previous owner had sprayed the typewriter directly with lubricant, rather than staying within the acceptable threshold. Over time, with the accumulation of dust and dirt, the oil turned into a mud-like substance which proved to be ridiculously difficult to remove. The typewriter was therefor completely disassembled, down to the ribbon-advance mechanism, the segment and the escapement in order to clean it out as best possible. Even though there might still be minute traces of excess oil, mainly due to the sheer inability to fully remove it without taking the typewriter apart down to every screw, the machine presents a much better mechanical integrity. Because I actually removed the segment and flushed it out, the keys move very freely and are joyous to type on. In general this typewriter is in great mechanical and aesthetic standing, and most certainly will prove to be able to stand the test of time and the work that it will be doing in the near future.
