1927 Neya 2 Serial # 31585 1927 Neya 2 typewriter, Serial # 31585 Aaron Friedrich Lotar Rolf Klamp's 1927 Neya 2 typewriter. 2022-01-19 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Aaron Friedrich Lotar Rolf Klamp: 1927 Neya 2 Serial # 31585 This Neya 2 portable was situated in east Germany before, and a beloved and firmly used Typewriter in the sellers Family, when Typewriters were the exclusive tools for all kind of daily correspondance.
After that, the Neya went to the attic, where it was forgotten two decates, before it went its way to the Bay.

Besides its decals, this little gem came to me in overall good condition. Of course it was dusty, and there were some home made ā€žimprovementsā€œ, like a nylon string somehow fixed at the back part of the return lever mechanism, and the drawband was in two, but the substance was good, with no parts missing, or rusty spots.
So, after doing the routine, it became a quite cute looking Typewriter again that is fully operational.

Another part of the restauration was the case, that needed almost more attention than itĀ“s inserts.

There is a crack running from one side of the upper half of the case to the other, but I have just focused on the ā€žfake leatherā€œ cloth that is applied to the wood, which had not only lost connection to its ground, fluttering around, as it was also brittle and in the process to disolve.
With a lot of wood glue I managed to stop this process, and connected the cloth again with the case.

I also dismounted the lock of the case and overhauled it, as it was bend terribly, cause someone didnĀ“t knew how to open it properly. ( Yes, I watched this happen quite some time now)

Some of my observations about this Neya in general, and specially this example are, that it has one of the most lightly operating backspace levers I ever encountered, but that the double-shift mechanism is equally the opposit. ItĀ“s damn heavy for a small typewriter like this.
Another complain, I maybe have only with this specimen, is the spacebar, that could definetly rest a little higher, so that you donĀ“t have to stich with your thumb behind the ā€žbumperā€œ whenever you want to use the spacer.
I have seen pictures other Neyas where this problem is obviously not existand, but I,m sure that mine was produced like that, and the only solution to fix it, would be to highten up the bar with the installment of a sheet of wood, metall, plastic or else.

Besides, a very positive thing is the fact, that the platen on my little Neya must have bin renewed one time, maybe shortly before it was send to retirement, as it is in great shape, soft and flexible.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Neya 2 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Neya Serial Number page and the Neya 2 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
