Description:
For nearing one hundred years since its manufacture, this machine types great. The glass keys are quintessentially classic, and these early Underwood Portables were favorites of many pre- and post-War writers. The Magician Orson Welles had one - same year - in simulated woodgrain, fitting for an artist with a keen aesthetic eye and a consummate flare for the dramatic. When you’re in a good groove with your fingers striking the keys just right, it’s almost like hitting all the frets on a guitar in perfect harmonic pitch. The metal ridges that rise slightly over the individual keys create this fret-ish effect. I’ve grown accustomed to using this machine to re-write and edit things that have already gone through multiple stages of drafting and revision - by no means in the everyday rotation. After all, she’s got to last another hundred years!
Writers: Jack Kerouac, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Orson Welles, Pablo Neruda
