Description:
A Corona 4.
This one was built in 1925, before Corona started painting the 4s with DuPont Duco paint. My other one is a rather pretty Duco blue, but it is a rust bucket.
The paint was pretty messed up on this one, with quite a bit of rust, especially on the ribbon covers. So I stripped and repainted it. I also touched up a lot of the flaking paint, to stop further rusting if nothing else.
The case looked like it had gotten some moisture damage, as the plywood was delaminating at parts, and some of the finger joints had come undone. I was able to fix these issues with wood glue. However, the covering is coming off on both the outside and inside. I am unsure if I'm just going to glue it back on, or if I want to try stripping the covering and just staining/varnishing the wood underneath.
The typewriter itself is in fair condition. Only one key was slightly sticky, and the ribbon advance/reverse seems to be working fine. The drawband was snapped - this seems to happen quite often on these Corona 4s, possibly because they used gut string. The spring motor and pully is pretty accessible on these early Coronas, so it was pretty easy to fix. The other thing that's wrong on this example is that the left margin adjuster's spring detent is broken, so it does not lock in place. Initially there was a bit of wire used to hold it in place, so I have done the same. I may take that part off of another Corona 4 if I ever get around to it.
Overall, it functions better than my other one, which is somewhat prettier, and rustier.

Trying very hard to be more judicious in my acquisitions...
I like interesting typefaces. I like tinkering with my acquisitions to make them work.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Corona 4 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Corona Serial Number page and the Corona 4 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
