1924 Demountable 1 Serial # 127350 1924 Demountable 1 typewriter, Serial # 127350 James Grooms's 1924 Demountable 1 typewriter. 2026-01-30 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of James Grooms: 1924 Demountable 1 Serial # 127350 As found.

*** Getting close. Waiting on some 16x10mm tubing for the feed rollers. Hopefully, a good fit.
Some challenges along the way: where will I find a substitute for that? The ribbon selector push button's red switch had been soldered previously and didn't move well in the bore. I saved the parts and epoxied it back together. Then some 'honing' with emory cloth to fit in the bore, while not pretty, works.
The neat cast piece on the ribbon reverse switch was also broken. Some more delicate work with epoxy and jeweler's files, and it might hold. If not, I think a Royal knob would work with some fabrication.
There were side panels on this one that are missing.
There are a number of features that you don't see often until later. A snap-out platen similar in design to later Underwoods.
Quick release to get the back carriage bearing past the track. So carriage removal is a two-screw process.
Quick release for the paper tray, which is really slick.
Spring-loaded holders for the paper bail finger rods made the rubber replacement super easy.
Trays to keep the segments clean.
Of course the slick body removal, which is accomplished by pulling the back lever out and lifting off. It then slips back down onto posts with a little look at the margin release lever position.
Hopefully it will type today. If the motion is off, that is another super easy setup with two screws right up top.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to anyone area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.
