Description:
This beautiful 3 Bank was an unexpected holiday gift from a neighbor of a friend. It had belonged to his mother, and he remembers typing high school papers on it. Based on age and condition, I am guessing it may have belonged to an older relative of his mother, perhaps a parent. It's too old for her to have bought new, but in such good condition that it appears to have been kept in one family and perhaps serviced regularly. The only significant flaw I could find is a crack in the platen. Oh, and a dead spider inside. Definitely a keeper (the typewriter, not the spider)!
Judging from the address label on the side, it appears to have spent most of its career in Washington, DC. Because I received one other typewriter (my Royalite) from this family, I believe the owner's name was Fran Harris.

I am a librarian, artist, writer, and co-author of the book Desegregation in Northern Virginia Libraries (The History Press, 2023). If I'm working on a book or article for publication, I'm on a computer. However, I use my typewriters to create poems, type-doodles, and to write snail mail letters. The tactile nature of typing on a manual machine works some kind of detox magic in this digital age. Each vintage typewriter has a soul and a story. Currently my collection is centered around midcentury models.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood Portable 3 Bank on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood Portable 3 Bank By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
