1922 Underwood 5 Serial # 1549096 1922 Underwood 5 typewriter, Serial # 1549096 Zachary Thompson's 1922 Underwood 5 typewriter. 2021-08-08 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Zachary Thompson: 1922 Underwood 5 Serial # 1549096 My dad found this in the basement of the cabin that is now Randall & Roberts Funeral Home in Fishers, Indiana. Prior to that, it must have lived in a local barn, that area being farm ground prior to development in the 1980s. Throughout my childhood, I would sneak into our basement storage room to play with this beyond-busted Underwood. He gave it to me along with two Royal HHs in Summer 2012 (they had been kept in a tower in his garage). Frozen with rust, with crumbling rulers, the spring was sprung since the drum was missing its cover. That first summer I liberated the movement, capped the drum with plastic, and even got it to type a little, but the rollers were flat and I despaired of fixing it properly. For the next 8 years, it lived in a tote in our garage. When I joined the typewriter Discord last summer, the crew there learned I had a U5 in storage and demanded to see it. Within weeks, Ken C. had sent donor parts: a new drum lid, rollers, and rulers (the donor machine was Pica, not Elite). Thanks to his generosity and the group's mechanical advice, this U5 types again!
