Description:
Culema typewriter
was produced only 5000 machine
3-row front stop with double shift. Models 1 and 2 were made in very small quantities, the final model 3 was slightly improved.
As an innovation, Kulema has completely closed housing from all sides. The lock button works in reverse: when the button is pressed, it is recorded normally when the button is released, the locking function takes effect and the shift keys are locked in the corresponding position. In the upper right corner of the keyboard is a key for the decoupling levers. Monochrome tape, the shift lever matrix on the left side panel.
A freely closed cover above the type basket interfered with users, so sometimes it was deleted and so is missing in many copies today.
Kurt Lehmann (born 13.5.1880, died 3.6.1966) dreamed of building cars as a child. After apprenticeship as watchmaker, he built watches and later aircraft. In 1918 he opened with his brother Ernst a mechanical workshop in Erfurt, soon they specialized in the repair of typewriters. Finally, Kurt Lehmann himself began to develop a typewriter.
Model 1 still carried the name Lehmann and was built from June to December 1919. Model 2 was already called Kulema and was from 1920 to 1921 in trade. With both models, the surviving copies have not survived today. Only model 3 could be sold in 1922 in significant quantities.
In 1924 Lehmann left the company in financial difficulties, the name was changed to Hansa, and the company was sold to Ferdinand Wallbell in Essen. 1926, the manufacture was discontinued. According to Ernst Martin (1921), there was still a model 4 with the preparation of a tabulator, but no longer came to the market.
At the end of 1923 a small typewriter named Orientalis appeared, which was only released in the smallest quantities.
Then Kurt Lehmann built a standard Universal typewriter (see There), but because of the global economic crisis, trade did not come.
