Description:
Called the Western Union Special, these Underwood mill typewriters were introduced in 1912 under contract for the Western Union Telegraph Company.
This particular example was likely made in the mid-teens. The last photo in the gallery shows the machine in the condition in which it was found.
*The dating of this machine is an approximation based on comparing details of regular Underwood 5’s of known date and other Western Union Specials, as well as information from old newspaper accounts and marketing material regarding the initial contract. There are currently no serial lists for Western Union Specials.
