Description:
This venerable model 4 makes do with fewer keys than the no. 5, so there is no zero (you use a capital O) and, awkwardly, you shift to get a period. The right shift key is really a shift lock, as on other early Underwoods, and it must be released with the left shift key.
The right key insert is a small ad for Peter Paul Service, PA 0865. Research shows that the company had this six-place phone number as late as 1951, when it was located at 808 Main Street in Cincinnati. The company still exists in 2016, but has relocated.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood 4 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood 4 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
