Description:
Monarch Mo.2
The s/n doesn't match.. but this specimen is really a n.2.. the decals and the ribbon color window leave no doubt about it.
The Monarch was the first front-strike typewriter from Typewriter Union, first produced in 1904.
It was meant to be an opponent to the Underwood n.5, and It did have some interesting mechanical innvovations, but really didn't match the target.
The greatest defect i found in this typewriter: horizontal alignment.. the lack of a typeguide together with the wearing of the typebar joints makes the spacing rather inaccurate, like you can see in the typing sample below.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Monarch 2 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Monarch Serial Number page and the Monarch 2 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
