The s/n doesn't match.. but this specimen is really a n.2.. the decals and the ribbon color window leave no doubt about it.
The Monarch was the first front-strike typewriter from Typewriter Union, first produced in 1904.
It was meant to be an opponent to the Underwood n.5, and It did have some interesting mechanical innvovations, but really didn't match the target.
The greatest defect i found in this typewriter: horizontal alignment.. the lack of a typeguide together with the wearing of the typebar joints makes the spacing rather inaccurate, like you can see in the typing sample below.

The keys have no type-segment, they are hooked one-by-one. The typebars are fixed to the basket by a tweezer-like system, easy to loosen in the time.

This machine is a basket-shift one, the ribbon is a standart two-tone 13mm.

This is an interesting system under the keyboard.. when a keybar is down it stops all the other keybars. This prevents typebar jamming, but sensibly slows down the typing rythm.
