More research is needed on this uncommon model of the Bar-Lock which uses a shift key instead of a full keyboard. The shift is directly connected to the carriage, which it simply tilts forward.
This database lists models 10 and 11 as shift models made 1902-1904. A no. 12 shift Bar-Lock is still advertised in Typewriter Topics in 1907. An ad in Typewriter Topics 1909 touts the "single-movement" Bar-Lock as opposed to the "antiquated 'Shift Key' keyboard," so I assume they weren't making shift machines by then.
There is no model number marked on this one. It came from the UK and is thus a Royal Bar-Lock instead of a Columbia Bar-Lock.
