Description:
This index typewriters lacks its wooden cover and the inking device (as there is no serial number I can not imagine if the inking was by roller and reservoire or by the strange ribbon loop that covers the brass typewheel of the second model).
As a Merritt is a pleasure to type with (of course I assume you are not in a hurry if you are using an index typewriter), this People is not nice at all. Where the Merritt looks and feels sturdy, the Peoples looks and feels feeble, unreliable.
They make an ultimate attempt with ribbon and two spools (in order to rid of from the unefficient inking methods of the first models), and even use a sound name to the last examples (Champion). The championship (if any) was not for them. This index typewriter (even with a proper inking method) is not a good one.
I've made an attempt to bring a typeface specimen sample, take a look and see what i've get (using carbon paper). Awful.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Peoples Index on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Peoples Serial Number page and the Peoples Index By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
