189x Caligraph 4 Serial # *5592 189x Caligraph 4 typewriter, Serial # *5592 Kyle Oelofse's 189x Caligraph 4 typewriter. 2024-05-23 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Kyle Oelofse: 189x Caligraph 4 Serial # *5592 This machine has severe cosmetic rusting yet retains most of its functionality. It's also lost the majority of its keytops, but that seems pretty normal for Caligraphs with celluloid keys. The well known big curtain logo on the palm rest is missing on this machine, and is instead a small circular and illegible logo with the partial phrase "EWSOME & GILBERT" along its top circumference. Whatever letter came before "EWSOME" was gouged off by some foreign impact. Likely a rebuilding company, though besides the palm rest the rest of the machine appears to have its original paint evidenced by the decayed varnish left over in many places.

According to source #160, No. 4s are nearly identical to No. 3 Specials, but can be differentiated by their round platens, which this machine has. It also mentions No. 4 serials beginning at least with 8574, however this machine's *5592 is nearly 3000 serials before that. Food for the Caligraph specialists out there, I suppose.

No photos yet because it needs a serious cleaning and my workbench is backed up as it is.

I inherited two Royal KMMs as a kid. Over a decade later I started actively collecting and repairing in 2015 shortly after discovering the existence of "weird" typewriters like the Blickensderfer and Hammond, and finding a destroyed Super Sterling to experiment on.
