Description:
In 1898, The Oliver Typewriter Company produced the Woodstock, an Oliver No. 2 variant manufactured specifically for department stores.
The Detroit Board of Education questioned the machine’s quality and price, citing its advertisement in the 1898–99 Montgomery Ward Catalogue. The Oliver Typewriter Company’s general sales manager described it as an unguaranteed second-grade machine, stating that only 19 were manufactured, all sold to Montgomery Ward.
The Oliver Typewriter Company published an advertisement offering to purchase 20 Woodstock machines, backing their claim only 19 were made. Production ended after less than 10 months on the market.
The only known survivor (#1009) was the ninth of 19 machines manufactured at the Woodstock factory in 1898.
