Description:
Harry Cross (1861-1940), an English-born machinist, began training in the sewing machine industry at the age of 17. After relocating to Canada in 1884, he worked for a sewing machine manufacturer there before moving to Ohio and later joining the National Sewing Machine Company in Belvidere, Illinois.
In 1896, Cross joined The Oliver Typewriter Company as head inspector and master mechanic at the Woodstock factory. During his long career with The Oliver Typewriter Company, he patented several highly valuable improvements to the Oliver typewriter. Cross also befriended most employees of the factory, as he was known for his kindness and good-heartedness.
Oliver No. 2 #8380, adorned with a custom plaque, was given to Harry Cross by The Oliver Typewriter Company.
