Description:
This is very early example of the Daugherty typewriter; it is the second-earliest serial known. The Daugherty typewriter was one of the first machines to offer true visible typing, letting typists see their words as they were written, which was a major advance in typewriter technology. It featured a front-strike mechanism, a four-row keyboard, and a single shift key, all of which became standard in later typewriters. Though not a commercial success, it pioneered the basic combination that the Wagner/Underwood and other 20th-century models eventually perfected. Its patents and design philosophy helped define the modern typewriter’s form and function, making it a important link in typewriter evolution.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Daugherty Visible on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Daugherty Serial Number page and the Daugherty Visible By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
