Description:
The Crandall Universal No. 3, produced by the Crandall Machine Co. after its move to Groton, NY, was a short-lived typewriter that retained the innovative cylindrical type-sleeve mechanism of the earlier Crandall New Model—allowing a single interchangeable print element to rotate and rise for characters, supporting visible writing and different typefaces—while switching to a plain, straight three-row QWERTY keyboard with double-shift. Unlike the highly ornate New Model with its curved two-row non-standard keyboard, mother-of-pearl inlay, painted florals, and gold scrollwork, the Universal No. 3 had a sober, stripped-down design.
