Description:
An elegant index typewriter, the Peoples is operated with the right hand moving the index pointer while the left hand controls the print, shift and space keys.
An interesting design feature of this typewriter is that the whole carriage is hinged and rocks forwards to make contact with the type-wheel under the nickel-plated disc.
An inked ribbon 'curtain' drops down (now missing) from the edge of the disc, brushing against the type-wheel as it turns.

I am a collector of 19th century typewriters and have built a collection that shows the remarkable ingenuity and beauty of the world's first typewriters. I have always been interested in the beginnings of a machine when there is an eruption of approaches to making it. Early typewriters are an exceptional example of this incubation period.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Peoples Index on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Peoples Serial Number page and the Peoples Index By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
