1890 Caligraph 3 Special Serial # *377 1890 Caligraph 3 Special typewriter, Serial # *377 Alan Sumrall's 1890 Caligraph 3 Special typewriter. 2020-07-02 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Alan Sumrall: 1890 Caligraph 3 Special Serial # *377 The 78 key 3 Special (6 rows of 13 keys) was introduced in 1890 as a standard offering although the 72 key No. 2 (six rows of 12 keys)was still produced concurrently (continuing with the original serial range) until about 1893-4. The 3 Special was improved and phased into the Caligraph No. 4 which continued the serial numbers of the 3 Special with the Asterisk being dropped somewhere in the transition. The last Caligraph 3 Specials and the No. 2's were improved with solid "vegetable ivory" (Palm seed) keys circa 1893 but the earlier 3 Specials retained the vulcanized rubber keys with paper and celluloid tops.

Note the new (introduced 1890 with the 3 Special) platen lifter frame with curved appearing edges of the 3 Special (and the follow on 1895 4) as opposed to the squared off edges of the No. 2 and earlier Caligrpaphs including the original 54 key "No. 3".
