Description:
The 78 key 3 Special (6 rows of 13 keys) was introduced in 1890 as a standard offering although the 72 key No. 2 (six rows of 12 keys)was still produced concurrently (continuing with the original serial range) until about 1893-4. The 3 Special was improved and phased into the Caligraph No. 4 which continued the serial numbers of the 3 Special with the Asterisk being dropped somewhere in the transition. The last Caligraph 3 Specials and the No. 2's were improved with solid "vegetable ivory" (Palm seed) keys circa 1893 but the earlier 3 Specials retained the vulcanized rubber keys with paper and celluloid tops.
