Description:
The exquisite Columbia 2 shows some primary changes to the Columbia 1. Notably, the type-wheel now prints across the top of the platen, with the anvil and leather cushion strip present on model 1 gone. Also the upper and lowercase characters are now on one larger type-wheel and the index pointer has two ends, one end for selecting lowercase characters and the other end for uppercase characters.

I am a collector of 19th century typewriters and have built a collection that shows the remarkable ingenuity and beauty of the world's first typewriters. I have always been interested in the beginnings of a machine when there is an eruption of approaches to making it. Early typewriters are an exceptional example of this incubation period.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Columbia 2 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Columbia Serial Number page and the Columbia 2 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
