Densmore Typewriter Co., Springfield, U.S.A., who had bought the small Merrit factory in Springfield, Massachusetts. Invented by Walter J. Barron, a relative of James Densmore. Sales for Densmore passed in 1907 to American Writing Machine Company, 345-347 Broadway, NYC, but this association was short-lived and the Densmore gradually disappeared from the market by 1910. 65,127

Manual Standards


Densmore No. 1

up to 10000 starting 1891 Earliest variation, has brass metal nameplate in the middle of the front, 38 keys and 76 characters, loops in connecting rods. Called "1a" by collectors. Advertised through 1892-1893, and available in Pica or Medium Roman type.
9 1/4" wide paper, 7" writing line, removable carriage, diagonal ribbon feed. Price $95, offered with table and cover for $100.
  1894-1896 Collector designated as "1b". With or without "Densmore" painted in the middle of the typebasket, no model number on right side of ring or anywhere else. No loops on connecting rods. 42 keys.  
    Collector designated as "1c". Always with "Densmore" and "No. 1" decals on front typebar ring. No loops on connecting rods. 42 keys.  

Densmore No. 2 • European Market

1500-9000 1892 Original No. 2 - Long carriage, 42 keys with 84 characters, "Densmore" label on front of frame. Available in Pic or Medium Roman type. Price $100, with table and cover for $105.
Produced concurrently to Model No. 1 for the European market.
  1893     Merged with Union Typewriter 145
  1899-1901 "New" No. 2, has 42 keys and capslock. Always marked with a "Densmore" and "No. 2" decals on the front typebar ring.  

Densmore No. 3

  introduced 1897     Same basic machine as the "New No. 2" but has more keys and is marked with a name and number decal on the front of the typebar ring.  

Densmore No. 4

10000-15000 introduced 1897 Estimated from known serial numbers, Improved and with 39 keys, available with Gorin tabulator and beefier frame 4,16

Densmore No. 5

25000-32000 starting 1904 Estimated from known serial numbers, same Model as No. 4, but with 43 keys 4,13

Densmore No. 6

  1907 Tabulator Model. 4
  1907     Merged with American Writing Machine Company 145
  1910     Production of all Densmore machines ended in 1910. Densmore dropped by American Writing Machine Company. 13,145
