1954 Olivetti Lettera 22

Serial #345536

For its astonishing balance of engineering, aesthetics, and portability, the Marcello Nizzoli-designed Olivetti Lettera 22 was one of the “hundred best designed products of our time," an accolade given in 1959 by the Illinois Institute of Technology. It also won the Italian Compasso d'Oro (Golden Compass) award for industrial design. Aside from its sophisticated minimalist lines, the Lettera 22 has an amazing typing action. It's got the right snap. This machine was re-conditioned by Tom Furrier of Cambridge Typewriter; quite a dream to type on. Made in Ivrea, Italy.

In a parallel universe, I was once the Senior Vice-President of Design (Typewriter Division) at Ing. C. Olivetti & C.,S.p.A., Ivrea, Italy. In the real universe, I'm a Chicago-based casual collector and hunter of Olivetti typewriters, and related ephemera, publications, and film sightings.
