1957 Smith Corona Silent Super Serial # 5T 576834X 1957 Smith Corona Silent Super typewriter, Serial # 5T 576834X Matt Watkins's 1957 Smith Corona Silent Super typewriter. 2024-03-27 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Matt Watkins: 1957 Smith Corona Silent Super Serial # 5T 576834X Purchased in a lot of 16 typewriters and this one is the most challenged by far. Besides needing a cleaning many keys are sticky, linkages of five keeps are detached, the back cover is missing, keys are faded, and body paint is questionable. This one will require the most work to get working again.

Update: Several days later I found an excellent video by Phoenix Typewriter and was able to reconnect the linkages. Plus this is the first body I've had off to facilitate and allowed me to clean more liberally without risking paint and laquer thinner. I did rob the paper fingers as I have another otherwise complete Super-Silent in better shape and missing one. This one is going to be sold as I have two others same Silent Supers.

After I cleaned thoroughly and put in a new ribbon, the type quality is pretty decent given the platen is fairly hard. and has that classic SC feel.

First hunt and pecked on a 60's Smith Corona Sterling my mother had and Took typing class in 1982 on an IBM Selectric as a means to get into the computer class my sophomore year. Probably reached 60wpm. Once I moved over to computers I never really went back to typewriters, but 40 years later I find myself enjoying the sound, feel, and smell of a now-vintage Selectric 2 and just picked up a 1955 Silent Super. We'll see how far down the rabbit hole I go....
