1949 Hermes Baby Serial # 5143422 1949 Hermes Baby typewriter, Serial # 5143422 Erik Bruchez's 1949 Hermes Baby typewriter. 2024-04-16 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Erik Bruchez: 1949 Hermes Baby Serial # 5143422 This 1949 Hermes Baby is the big brother (or sister?) of these other Babys I have:

- 1951: https://typewriterdatabase.com/1951-hermes-baby.16526.typewriter
- 1961: https://typewriterdatabase.com/1961-hermes-baby.12502.typewriter
- 1971: https://typewriterdatabase.com/1971-hermes-baby.18998.typewriter

This, like the others, has a Swiss QWERTZ keyboard layout.

I like that, unlike with the 1971 model, it is very easy to unscrew the body panels for cleaning and maintenance.

The case top has a little bump, and some stains. I tried to remove them, but it didn't work well and I feared that I might damage the crinkle paint, so I am leaving it as is.

I gave it the same treatment as the 1951 machine, with new red felt. I also replaced the case's rubber feet.

I started collecting my first pre-WW2 standard typewriters in 2017. Since then I have added a few machines to my collection, which now ranges from the 1890s to the 1980s. As of 2020, I have more big standard (desktop) typewriters than portables, and a few standard electrics.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Hermes Baby on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Hermes Serial Number page and the Hermes Baby By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
